Slovenia is fast becoming one of the hottest destinations in Europe. With great beaches in the east near Koper and Piran hemmed in by the cave-ridden Karst, and the Julian Alps in the north, this central European country is packed with natural beauty.
It also possesses one of the most captivating capitals in Europe. Ljubljana is seriously underrated – it’s compact, green, friendly and crammed with top bars and restaurants, all of which serve food and drinks at prices that represent excellent value when compared to those in nearby Italy and Austria.
More to the point, it is one of the few capital cities in what was formerly known as Eastern Europe (a term the Slovenians would argue vehemently against) that has not been overrun by stag and hen parties looking to take advantage of cheap drinks. This is partly because accommodation and entertainment costs are higher than in the likes of Tallinn (Estonia), Riga (Latvia) and Prague (Czech Republic), but a lack of direct cheap flights with budget airlines also plays a part.
However, this is changing (the lack of flights – not the influx of bucks parties, mercifully). It seems as though the low cost carriers are beginning to discover the wonders of a country regarded by some as the Switzerland of the Balkans.
Cheap Flights With Budget Airlines to Ljubljana, Slovenia, from England
Currently, the only direct service from the UK to the Slovenian capital operated by a budget airline is Easyjet’s regular flight from London Stansted to Ljubljana airport.
Cheap Flights With Budget Airlines to Maribor, Slovenia, from England
However, competitor Ryanair has recently started up a bargain price service from London Stansted to Maribor in the north-east of the country. This is possibly a better option for those wanting to explore the less travelled path near the borders with Austria and Hungary.
The only other country on the continent that currently has a low cost carrier flying to Ljubljana is Belgium. Wizzair operates a route from Brussels to the Slovenian capital.
Visitors wanting to hit Slovenia’s short coastline, or explore the Karst and caves such as the one at Postojna, may be better off not flying into Ljubljana anyway. Why? Because these attractions are in the east of the country, and the nearest airport is actually just over the border in Trieste, Italy. It only takes one look at the map to show that flying into that airport from London Stansted with Ryanair might be the way forward for a Slovenian holiday.
