Nuremberg Airport (Flughafen Nürnberg) is the tenth largest in Germany and second in Bavaria after Munich Airport (MUC). During 2007, just over 4 million passengers departed from Nuremberg mostly on European flights. Around half of all passengers were on scheduled flights and the rest on charter flights.
Air Berlin, Germany’s favorite low-cost airline, flies from Nürnberg to Berlin-Tegel (TXL), Budapest, Catania, Cologne/Bonn (CGN), Dortmund, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Friedrichshafen, Fuerteventura, Funchal, Hamburg, Hanover, Lanzarote, Leipzig/Halle, London-Stansted (STN), Münster/Osnabrück, Paderborn, Palma de Mallorca, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Rome-Fiucimino, Rostock, Vienna, and Volos.
TUIfly has flights from Nürnberg to mostly Mediterranean holiday destinations Antalya, Fuerteventura, Heraklion, Hurgada, Korfu, Kos, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palma de Mallorca, Rhodes, and Thessaloniki.
Lufthansa uses mostly regional partners such as Lufthansa City Line and Eurowings to fly from Nürnberg to Berlin-Tegel (TXL), Brussels, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.
Several airlines fly to Nürnberg mostly to offer through connections to long-distance flights from other European hubs. These include:
Cheap tickets are often available on strongly contested routes such as flights to Berlin, Vienna, Palma de Mallorca, and Antalya.
Nuremberg Airport’s motto – Einfach Abheben (Simply Take Off) – was well chosen. Rarely is it easier to get to an airport than it is to get to NUE whether by car, bus, train, bicycle, or even on foot.
In contrast to most German airports, Nürnberg is not directly next to an autobahn. This makes it possible to cycle or even walk right up to the departure lounge.
However, the U-Bahn commuter train is the easiest and fastest way from Nuremberg’s old town to the airport. U-Bahn line U2 connects Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) and Nürnberg Flughafen (Airport) in 12 minutes. The U-Bahn runs up to 6 times per hour from around 4 am to past midnight. Tarifstufe 2 (Tariff Zone 2) tickets are required – currently €1.90 (US$ 2.80).
Nürnberg Airport is just south of Autobahn A3, which runs from Cologne via Frankfurt, Würzburg, Nürnberg, and Regensburg to Passau and into Austria. Coming from the north, use exit 84 (Tennenlohe) and from the south, use exit 85 (Nürnberg-Nord). From the old town, use either Bundestraße B2 or B4.
Alternative German airports to Nürnberg include Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC). When entering Germany at one of these airports, it is generally better to continue by train to Nuremberg unless the connecting flight is included in the original ticket.
