Although it is possible to fly from Dresden Airport (DRS) to around 400 destinations in more than 100 countries, the number of non-stop flights and destinations are far more limited. Most cheap flights go south to the larger Mediterranean region where Germans enjoy their holidays. However, numerous flights are available from the capital of Saxony to German airports and other West European cities including London. Dresden Airport is also very convenient for travelers to Meißen, home of Meissen porcelain.
Lufthansa has by far the largest number of flights to Dresden. Lufthansa frequently has special internet-only low airfares on German domestic as well as European routes. Lufthansa flies non-stop from Dresden to Düsseldorf (DUS), up to 7x per day to Frankfurt (FRA) and as Lufthansa CityLine to Munich (MUC). Cirrus Airlines flies for Lufthansa from Dresden to Hamburg (HAM) and Zürich (ZRH). Lufthansa offers guaranteed connections to its extensive world-wide network.
Air Berlin, frequently rated as Europe’s best low-cost carrier, has non-stop flights from Dresden (DRS) to Düsseldorf (DUS), Munich (MUC), and Nürnberg (NUE). Air Berlin also flies non-stop to popular holiday destinations including Antalya (AYT), Arrecife (ACE), Corfu (CFU), Fuerteventura (FUE), Funchal (FNC), Heraklion (HER), Hurghada (HRG), Ibiza (IBZ), Kos (KGS), Las Palmas (LPA), Monastir (MIR), Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Rhodos (RHO), Tenerife South (TFS), and Thessaloniki (SKG). Air Berlin has connection flights from Dresden to around 30 destinations – mostly via Nürnberg or Mallorca.
Low-cost airline German Wings has non-stop flights from Dresden (DRS) to Cologne-Bonn (CGN), Stuttgart (STR), and Corfu (CFU). German Wings also has numerous connecting flights – luggage need to be re-checked at the special transfer desks at Cologne, Stuttgart, and Berlin airports.
The only non-stop flights from the UK to Dresden (DRS) are not from London Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN), or Heathrow (LHR) but rather from London Gatwick (LGW). Surprisingly, the daily non-stop flight is not on a typical budget airline or Lufthansa but rather on British Airways.
Few airports in the world can be reached as conveniently by public transportation as Dresden Airport. S-Bahn train S2 departs every half hour from the Airport to reach Dresden-Neustadt in 13 minutes and Dresden-Hauptbahnhof in 23 minutes. The ticket cost €1.80 – significantly less than the price of a cup of coffee on most European budget airlines (or cafés for that matter). For Meißen, change to S-Bahn train S1 at Dresden-Neustadt – total traveling time is just less than an hour.
While in Dresden and Meißen check out events and museums participating in the 300 Years of Meissen Porcelain program.
