Cheap tickets and low airfares are available on flights to Hamburg Airport (HAM) on low-cost airlines including Air Berlin, Easyjet, Germanwings, OLT, and Lufthansa.
Hamburg Airport is the third busiest in Germany. Over a hundred destinations can be reached from here on non-stop flights flown by both full-service and low-cost airlines.
In contrast to many other regional airports, Hamburg Airport is not dominated by low-cost carriers. Budget airlines including Air Berlin, Easyjet, Flybe, Germanwings, and TUIfly have to compete for landing slots and destinations with full-service carriers such as Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, and KLM.
German budget airline Air Berlin (AB) flies from Hamburg (HAM) daily up to nine times to Munich (MUC), six times to Stuttgart (STR), four times to Düsseldorf (DUS) and Vienna (VIE), three times to Nürnberg (NUE), Palma de Mallorca (PMI), and Zurich (ZRH), twice to Karlsruhe/Baden–Baden (FKB), and daily to Barcelona (BCN), Malaga (AGP), Manchester (MAN), and Rome (FCO).
Generally Germany’s cheapest budget airline Germanwings (4U) flies from Hamburg up to three times daily to Munich (MUC), Palma de Mallorca (PMI), and Stuttgart (STR), twice daily to London Gatwick (LGW), daily to Toulouse (TLS), and three times per week to Moscow Vnukovo.
British budget airline Easyjet flies from Hamburg Airport up to twice daily to Basel (BSL) and from spring 2008 to Paris (CDG), and daily to Geneva (GVA) and London Luton (LTN).
Several charter airlines as well as low-cost airlines including Air Berlin, Condor, TUIfly, and Germanwings fly seasonally to popular holiday destinations, predominantly in the Mediterranean region. Flights are often only once or twice a week and generally slotted in with package deals but available seats are sold to anyone.
Transportation from downtown Hamburg to Hamburg Airport by train is currently unnecessarily complicated. Airport Express Bus 110 connects the Airport with S and U-Bahn Station Ohlendorf every 10 minutes. From here, take S1 to the Hauptbahnhof or U1 to Jungfernsteg. Total travel time is just over half an hour. From end 2008, a direct S-Bahn train will run from the airport every 10 minutes in 23 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof.
Until then, the Airport Express Bus (Jasper) is faster. It connects the Hauptbahnhof (exit Kirchenallee across the road from the Hotel Europäischer Hof) and airport in 25 minutes every 15 minutes from 5 am to 10 pm (midnight from the airport). It cost €5 (€8 return). Taxis is around €20.
Buses are also available directly from Hamburg Airport to Kiel, Lübeck, and Hannover.
