Low-cost airlines offer cheap flights & tickets to north German airports including Hamburg (HAM), Lübeck (LBC), Rostock (RLG), Bremen (BRE), and Hannover (HAJ) Airports.
The deregulation of European air traffic has led to the welcome arrival of low-cost airlines in Germany. It is no longer necessary to take the train to a major airport to fly expensively to Frankfurt and then on to the end destination. Increasingly cheap direct flights are available to German and European destinations from more convenient regional airports.
Low-cost and budget airlines are leading the way but regional airlines as well as full-service airlines such as Lufthansa compete on price and convenience for an increasing number of passengers. Most flights are to European destinations but domestic flights are also available especially to Munich (MUC), which takes time to reach by road or rail from northern Germany, as well as airports such as Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart where German budget airlines offer guaranteed connections.
The most important airport in northern Germany is Hamburg Airport (HAM). It offers the largest number of airlines, flights, and destinations. Hamburg Airport it the third largest in Germany.
Flights are available on most European airlines to major European airports. Budget airlines fly to large cities as well as a wide range of holiday destinations mostly in the Mediterranean region.
Lübeck Blankensee Airport (LBC) is usually advertised by low-cost airlines as Hamburg (Lübeck) Airport. It is around an hour by road from Hamburg but very convenient to Lübeck with its lovely UNESCO World Cultural Heritage listed old town. The number of flights are limited but generally cheaper than from Hamburg on budget airlines Ryanair, Wizz, and Jet2com.
Hannover Airport (HAJ) – Hanover in English – is after Hamburg Airport the busiest in northern Germany. It is a major departure point for low-cost and charter flights to holiday destinations especially along the Mediterranean.
In recent years, Hannover Airport has also become popular as a gateway to Eastern Europe and Central Asia. In Germany, only Frankfurt International has more flights to these regions.
Bremen Airport (BRE) is a mere 3.5 km (2 miles) from downtown Bremen. It has far fewer flights than Hamburg and Hannover but is increasingly popular with low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet. Locally based regional airline OLT has many flights from here.
Rostock Airport (RLG), on the Baltic Coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is one of the smallest international airports in Germany. The majority of flights from here is on low-cost and charter airlines to holiday destinations. However, travelers also appreciate the frequent flights to Munich (MUC), an otherwise over eight-hour journey by rail.
