Getting to Berlin's Tegel and Schönefeld Airports to connect to cheap low-cost flights is easy. Trains and buses from Zoo and Mitte are fast, frequent, and cheap.
Berlin’s Tegel and Schönefeld Airports are best reached by public transportation. Tegel is in tariff zone B, requiring an AB ticket from Central Berlin, while Schönefeld is currently in tariff zone C, requiring an ABC ticket from Central Berlin. All regular tickets and passes are valid.
Tegel is the more convenient in the northwestern suburbs of Berlin and mostly used by full-service airlines. It is due to close when the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BBI) opens after 2011. BBI is being constructed next to Schönefeld Airport to the south of Berlin. Most cheap flights on low-cost airlines are from Schönefeld, although Air Berlin uses mostly Tegel.
Buses from Tegel Airport (TXL) to Central Berlin Mitte
Buses are the most convenient way from Tegel Airport to central Berlin. Buses generally operate from before 5 am to around midnight. Buses run every few minutes making timetable consultation fairly irrelevant during normal business hours.
Two JetExpressBuses – extra-long buses with special space for luggage – run from Tegel Airport. These buses only halt at major stops, which are where most foreign travelers get of anyway.
X9 connects Flughafen Tegel with Zoologischer Garten Station, the heart of former West Berlin, in 20 minutes.
TXL runs from Flughafen Tegel to Prenzlauer Berg in 40 minutes. En route, it stops amongst others at the Hauptbahnhof (20 minutes), Unter den Linden (30 minutes), and Alexander Platz (35 minutes).
Regular bus lines from Tegel Airport to Central Berlin:
Bus 109 connects Flughafen Tegel with Zoologischer Garten Station in 27 minutes. It has more stops than bus X9 – amongst others at the following S and U-Bahn train stations: Charlottenburg (17 minutes), Adenauerplatz (19 minutes), Uhlandstraße (23 minutes), and Kurfürstendamm (25 minutes).
Transportation from Schönefeld Airport (SXF) to Central Berlin Mitte
Schönefeld Airport is currently less conveniently located than Tegel for users of public transportation to Central Berlin. Most foreign visitors will find the Airport Express or other S-Bahn trains the most convenient.
Trains from Schönefeld Airport to Berlin
The Airport Express is the fastest and generally most convenient way to central Berlin. It is a special regional train (RE7 or RB14 but clearly marked as Airport Express) that runs every half hour from S-Bahn Station Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld through central Berlin to Spandau in 45 minutes. En route, it stops at Ostbahnhof (17 minutes), Alexanderplatz (21 minutes), Friedrichstraße (24 minutes), Hauptbahnhof (28 minutes), and Zoologischer Garten (32 minutes). The Airport Express runs from around 5 am to 11 pm. S-Bahn train S9, which follows the same route in just over an hour but with more stops, has more services late at night.
It is a 400-m (1/4 mile) walk via a covered walkway from the airport to the railway station – bus 162 or 171 can also be used. (The new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, due to open in 2011 but probably a few years later, will have the S-Bahn and long distance train stations right in its center.)
RB22 goes directly from Schönefeld to Potsdam hourly in just less than an hour.
Buses from Schönefeld Airport
For foreign travelers, buses from Schönefeld Airport are generally less useful except to connect to the nearby S-Bahn and U-Bahn train stations.
Buses 162 and 171 (and night bus N60) run from Flughafen Schönefeld via S-Bahn Station Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld (3 minutes) to S-Bahn Station Adlershof in 19 minutes.
X7 is a JetExpressBus connecting Flughafen Schönefeld and U-Bahn station Rudow (U-Bahn line U7) in 7 minutes. Night bus N71 does the same route.
Expressbus-Linie SXF1 is a new fast, if somewhat expensive, express bus service to Südkreuz Station and may be of use to travelers going to southern parts of Berlin.
For visitors, Berlin’s public transportation is the cheapest way to connect to low-cost flights at Berlin's two airports. It is also the easiest way to transit between Tegel and Schönefeld airports if luggage is not too bulky.

Thanks for the great information. My wife and I
are traveling to Berlin the September and I found some information on the
Visit Berlin website regarding the Schonfeld fare zone. It says:
"Attention: Since April 1, 2008 you will need the ABC ticket from
Schönefeld to Berlin because Schönefeld belongs then to the zone C S-Bahn."
So it would appear that travelers using the
Airport express will now need a ticket or pass valid for zones A, B and C.
The link is:
Thanks for pointing it out. I’ve adjusted the information in the article to
prevent confusion. €2.80 from downtown Berlin to Schönefeld is still cheap,
even if Tegel can be reached for €2.10, but being caught with the wrong
ticket could set you back around €40.
German cities have an
irritating habit of milking train passengers on the way to the airport.
Frankfurt International Airport (FRA), for example, has its own tariff zone
to up the price for travelers from downtown.

Hi We are looking in to arriving at Schonenfeld airport at 09:10 and
departing from Tegal airport at 11:50 on the 2nd December. Given that we
have to pick up our bags and arrive at least 30 minutes before departure
what is the best way to travel between the airports? Ian
Nov 1, 2008 12:05 AM
Henk Bekker :
The easiest will be taking the Regional-Express (RE) or S-Bahn S9 from
Berlin Schönefeld to Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Central Train Station) and change
there to Bus TXL for Tegel Airport.
The RE trains leave
Schönefeld at 9:25 & 9:55 (10:26 will get you to Tegel only at 11:25)
and S9 trains leave at 9:38 and 9:58. TXL buses depart so frequently it is
hardly worth checking the schedules. Total traveling time should be between
just less than an hour and 1h10.
By car, the transfer from
Schönefeld to Tegel can be done in about 45 minutes but it will of course
cost whether taking a taxi or booking a Berlin transfer service.

Hello Henk, I'm arriving at Schönenfeld airport at 22:45 on Thursday
20th november with EasyJet. I'm a worried beacause I can't find enough
information about the timetable for rail and buses at night from 23:00 and
through the night in case my flight is delayed. Is there any train running
around midnight or later, or any bus. I've got to get to Alexanderplatz. Thank you, Carol
Nov 2, 2008 7:22 AM
Henk Bekker :
Up to 23:58, simply take the Regional-Express or S-Bahn S9 directly to
Alexanderplatz – a train is available every 20 minutes or so.
Thereafter things are slightly more complicated but transportation
remains available throughout the night. The easier option is to take S-Bahn
S9 towards Warschauer Straße and get off after four stops (14 minutes) at
Berlin-Schöneweide. Change to bus N65 in the direction of Hackescher Markt
and get off at Alexanderplatz. This S-Bahn & bus combination takes 40
minutes with the S-Bahn leaving Schönefeld twice hourly (28 & 58
minutes past the hour) – last departure at 02:28.
Further
options are available during the night but require several bus changes.
Direct RE and S-Bahn trains run again from just before 4 am.

Carol22 :
Thank you so much for your tips, Henk! I was mistaken about my
destination. My hotel is not exactly at Alexanderplatz but at Schönhauser
Allee.
Up to 23:58, I can take the Regional-Express or S-Bahn S9
directly to Alexanderplatz, and then how do I get to Schönhauser Allee?
If it's after 23:58, I still take S-Bahn S9 towards Warschauer
Straße and get off at Berlin-Schöneweide and change to bus N65? Do I have
to take another bus in Alexanderplatz?
Thank you!
Nov 2, 2008 11:32 PM
Henk Bekker :
Assuming your destination is the Meininger Hotel at Schönhauser Allee 19,
Prenzlauerberg, you have to use U-Bahn Stop Senefelderplatz, which is
directly at the hotel:
Up to the 23:58 departure of S-Bahn S9,
change at Alexanderplatz to U-Bahn U2 (direction Pankow) and get off at
Senefelderplatz (two stops).
For later departures, follow the
description in the previous post but continue past Alexanderplatz to
Hackescher Markt. Change here to bus N2 (direction Pankow) and get off at
Senefelderplatz. (Note that the S-Bahn trains after midnight run in the
direction away from central Berlin so don’t miss the Schöneweide stop.)

On Dec. 30th, I arrive from Schönefeld airport at 9:30 am. The following
day, I have a 6 am flight from TXL. Therefore, have chosen to stay near
TXL. What is the best way to get from Shonefeld to TXL?
Dec 18, 2008 10:05 AM
Henk Bekker :
Click on transit link in the final paragraph of the article above to get
details on the easiest ways to travel between SXF and TXL.
It is
not really necessary to stay close to Tegel – bus X109 can get you to Tegel
Airport from Zoologischer Garten before 4 am if needed and various options
are available from other parts of Berlin. However, at this early hour it is
best to check timetables in advance.

Hi, I am travelling from Schonefeld to hotel agon aldea on Bulowstrasse.
Can I get a train direct to either Bulowstrasse or Kurfurstenstrasse?
Thanks
Mar 25, 2009 6:59 AM
Henk Bekker :
No, the simplest way is to take the train to either Alexanderplatz or
Zoologischer Garten stations and change there to U-Bahn train U2 for
Bülowstraße station. From Alexanderplatz take the U-Bahn U2 in the
direction Ruhleben and from Zoologischer Garten in the direction
Pankow.
Personally, I would travel via Zoologischer Garten
station but there is very little time difference in the two routes – both
take around an hour depending on the transfer time.

Thanks Henk, I assume the airport express is the quickest way to
Alexenderplatz?
Mar 25, 2009 8:55 AM

The Airport Express is generally the fastest although the S9 is not much
slower making it hardly worth waiting for the Airport Express if an S9 is
about to depart.

Mar 26, 2009 6:00 AM
Henk Bekker :
The simplest is train (Airport Express or S9) to Zoologischer Garten
station and then change to U-Bahn train U9 going in the direction Rathaus
Steglitz and get off at Güntzelstraße U-Bahn stop, which is in front of the
hotel. The last possible departure on weekdays for this routing is 23:38
from SXF but bus options are available throughout the night.

thanks for the help hank
Apr 28, 2009 1:59 PM
Henk Bekker :
The fastest option is to take the S Bahn S9 to Treptower Park and change to
S42 to Frankfurter Allee station. Traveling time is around 30 minutes.
Alternatively, take the S-Bahn / Regionalbahn to Alexander Platz
and change there to U-Bahn U5 and get off at Samariterstrasse stop. This
option is around 45 minutes but depends on train connection times.
The walk from Frankfurter Allee is a bit further but not much.
The fare for both options is the same: ABC ticket at €2.80. Both routes
should work OK up to just before midnight.

Do I have to go to Zoo Station to take a train to Dresden (my final

No, most long-distance trains no longer stops at Berlin Zoo station. From
Tegel, take the bus to Berlin-Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) and change there
to the train for Dresden.

to our hotel in Postdamer Str, Berlin. Can you advise the best way using
public transport? Regards Gary
May 14, 2009 5:27 AM
Henk Bekker :
It depends on where you want to go - Potsdamer Straße is fairly long with
several U and B Bahn train stations. The basics remain the same though:
train from Schönefeld to downtown Berlin and change to the S-Bahn, U-Bahn,
or bus line with a stop closest to your hotel. Almost all of these lines
eventually cross the path of the S-Bahn train from Schönefeld to Spandau.

transfer.

Jun 6, 2009 1:12 PM
Henk Bekker :
Wilhelmstraße is too long to make a sensible recommendation without knowing
from exactly where you want to depart. Trains as described in the article
above run from around 4:30 am so all you need to do is get to one of the
S-Bahn stations - buses should be available. You need a normal Berlin
transportation ticket for zones ABC / pass that cover those zones.

What bus # should I take for the quickest and easiest route to Ziegelstr.
from Tegel. I prefer not to change from Bus to Train.
Jun 7, 2009 4:33 AM
Henk Bekker :
Assuming it is Ziegelstraße in Mitte, Bus TXL to Karlplatz followed by a 10
minute walk to the T-junction of Ziegelstraße and Friedrichstraße –
obviously a bit more if your destination is closer to Monbijou.

Hi Henk,
Came across this page when looking for information on
transfers from Schönefeld Airport.
My hotel's nearest
underground stop is Kurfuerstendamm. Do you know is this is near
Zoologischer Garten.
I will be arriving in Berlin on a Monday
morning at about 1100 and returning on a Sunday at 1030.
What
travel ticket would you recommend. Is it better to get a 7 day pass for
Zones ABC.
Thanks for your time.
David
Jun 15, 2009 6:08 AM
Henk Bekker :
It is probably easier to walk from Zoologischer Garten Station than to
change to the Kurfürstendamm U-Bahn station for a very short ride.
Depending on exactly where your hotel is, taking a bus may be an option.
Getting an ABC week pass (€32.30) is generally a good idea but of
course depends on where and how often you plan to travel.

Hi henk, many thanks for you reply. my wife & I are visiting
Berlin for the first time and would be looking to do all the tourist
stuff. I am wondering if you require to use public transport to get to
all the main tourist sites or is it possible to walk. Do you know how
much single tickets are. It might be cheaper to do that. I saw on your
site that their is a opentop bus round Berlin do you know how much they
are. once again many thanks David
Jun 15, 2009 12:03 PM
Henk Bekker :
A pass generally works out cheaper if you use the bus more than twice per
day and as tourist in Berlin you are most likely to do that. The ABC pass
covers virtually all trains and buses in Berlin and you can also use it to
for example Potsdam - just avoid the fastest trains.
I have no
idea how much the open-top bus tours are currently but you can save a lot
and see basically the same by using bus 100 and bus 200 with your bus pass.

Easiest is the luggage center (DB Gepäck Center) on the first floor (one
level lower than the railway line) - €5 per item per day. Normal coin
lockers are in the parking garage (Parkaus Bereich C, level -3) - €3 for
small lockers, €5 for larger ones.

Warschauer Straße at around 23.00/24.00?
Many thanks,

Jul 28, 2009 3:02 AM
Henk Bekker :
Maybe. Berlin's S-Bahn system is currently in chaos due to maintenance and
construction issues. Unfortunately, you do not state exactly what day you
are traveling. The best may be to inquire at the airport. As far as I can
see, S9 currently does not stop at night at Warschauer Straße, requiring a
transfer at nearby Ostbahnhof or at Schlesischer Tor. A not particularly
easy to read flyer is available at: http://www.vbb.kontur-bb.de/flyer.pdf

JetExpressBus TXL to Beusselstraße (around 8 min), change to S-Bahn train
S41 to Frankfurter Allee Station, and walk around two blocks up Frankfurter
Allee towards Frankfurter Tor. Total traveling time is around half an
hour.
Trains to Kassel will leave from the Main Station (Berlin

OK, someone has lost the plot a bit. Berlin-Tegel (S) station is in the
suburb Tegel but quite some distance from Tegel Airport (TXL) and fairly
difficult to reach from the airport by public transportation.
Ignore the first part of your itinerary completely and take bus TXL from
Tegel Airport to Berlin-Hauptbahnhof. The bus runs around every ten minutes
and takes 20 minutes. From Berlin-Hauptbahnhof proceed by ICE to
Leipzig.
ICE 1575 leaves Berlin Hauptbahnhof at 16:58, usually

Berlin Hauptbahnhof will probably be the easiest but any station on the S
line with baggage lockers would work fine. If your bags are too big for
lockers, the Hauptbahnhof has a left luggage center but it is open only
between 6 am and 10 pm - keep that in mind, if you need an early check in
at Schönefeld.

Sep 4, 2009 7:54 AM
Henk Bekker :
Buy an AB zone day ticket – currently €6.10 per person – which will cover
all public transportation cost from Tegel to Berlin, in Berlin, and back.
Tickets are bought from vending machines – instructions are in English.
Take bus X9 from Tegel to Zoologischer Garten Station (half an hour
travel). From here, walk down the Kurfürstendamm or Tauenzienstraße – both
major shopping streets. For great and cheap sightseeing use bus 100 (or bus
200) from Zoologischer Garten Station to the former East Berlin. These two
bus lines pass by all the major tourist sights in Berlin – see
http://www.suite101.com/reference/berlin_public_bus for a description of
both routes.
Further great shopping opportunities are available
in the former East Berlin within walking distance from stops on bus 100 or
bus 200.
Return to Tegel on bus X9 from Zoologischer Garten
Station or on Bus TXL from Berlin Hauptbahnhof (or Unter den Linden /
Alexander Platz if more convenient).
All these buses run with
such high frequency that advance planning or timetable checks are not
necessary, except check the traveling times back to Tegel – see article
above – to be in time for the flight.

Due to safety inspections of trains, the S Bahn service in Berlin is
severely interrupted. The S Bahn train S9 currently does not run through
from Schönefeld to Alexander Platz.
Inquire at the airport
about options and state the exact address you are traveling to or do an
electronic time table search with your exact traveling dates and times at
www.s-bahn-berlin.de. Currently, expect at least one but more likely two or
three transfers with traveling time of at least an hour.
Passengers able to leave Schoenefeld Airport before 22:49 may use the
direct Regional Express train.

Sep 19, 2009 10:10 AM
Henk Bekker :
Three basic options, each taking around 50 minutes total traveling time:
The simplest, if not necessarily the fastest is to take Bus TXL to
Berlin Hauptbahnhof (20 minutes), change to bus M41 to Körtestraße, which
is about 100 m from your given address.
Alternatives:
One transfer:
From Tegel (TXL) take bus 128 to Osloerstraße
(23 minutes) and change to U-Bahn U8 to Schönleinstraße (19 minutes)
or
Two transfers:
Take bus X9 from Tegel to
Jakob-Kaiser-Platz (4 minutes), then U-Bahn U7 to Hermannplatz (28 min),
then U8 to Schönleinstraße (2 min).
From Schönleinstraße, it is
a 300 m walk.

See my comment on Sep 4, 2009 but buy a ABC day ticket (Tageskarte) (€6.50
each) rather than an AB ticket and take the train from downtown Berlin as
described above to SXF rather than Tegel. Try to arrive a bit early at
Schönefeld as it is a bit of a walk from the train to the terminal building
and trains are limited at the moment due to safety checks (of the trains!).
Before 10 pm there should still be trains at least every half hour though.

Henk Bekker :
From SXF take the train to Berlin Zoologischer Garten Station as described
above and then Bus 100 (direction Alexanderplatz) to Lützowplatz (4 stops /
6 minutes).
Total traveling time should be around an hour.

Train to Zoologischer Garten station and then bus 109 to Fasanenstraße - it
is an easy walk too if without luggage.

Henk, Many thanks for your M41 advice back on September 19. Your
directions were excellent. We were able to get to Dieffenbachstrasse from
Tegel as if we had been doing it all of our lives. And for the next 11 days
we took the bus and U-Bahn regularly. The S-Bahn was not working when we
were in Berlin. Again, many thanks. LaValle and Bill

Henk Bekker :
From SXF, take the train to Friedrichstraße as described in the article and
from there either walk, or take U-Bahn U6 to Französische Straße, or if
traveling with luggage take a taxi as it is only a few blocks down
Friedrichstraße to Gendarmenmarkt & the Hilton.

Henk Bekker :
Cheapest is bus X9 to Zoologischer Garten Station followed by a short walk
(or a very short taxi ride). A taxi from Tegel Airport to the Palace Hotel
should be around €30.
