Budget and low-cost airlines offer cheap flights from Toluca International Airport to popular Mexican destinations including CancĂșn, Tijuana, Acapulco, and Guadalajara.
Mexican budget airlines generally operate their cheap flights from Mexico City to other Mexican destinations from Toluca International Airport (TLC) to the west of the Mexican capital. Mexico City Airport (MEX) is in the center of the world’s second largest metropolis but chronic overcrowding and costs force most budget airlines to use Toluca.
Volaris infrastructure is typical of low-cost airlines: reservations are made online or through call centers, no frequent-flyer program nonsense, and only a single type of plane is used. However, here the budget airline resemblance stops. Its fleet of Airbus A319 planes is on average less than two-years old and has leather seats.
Free drinks and snacks are offered on most flights, as is in-flight television entertainment. iPod TVs are available for a minimal fee on the Toluca-Cancún route. Online check in and seat selection are available 4 to 24 hours prior to departure. Up to two carry-on bags and two checked suitcases are transported for free.
Volaris has at least three daily non-stop flights from Toluca to Cancún and Tijuana; twice-daily flights from Toluca to Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Merida, and Monterrey; and daily flights from Toluca to Los Cabos, Mexicali, and Villahermosa. A daily flight is available from Toluca to Aguascalientes on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Volaris offers passengers a free shuttle-bus service from Sante Fe to Toluca Airport (arrive at Sante Fe at least two and a half hours prior to departure). Reasonably priced shuttle services go from the Amtrak station in San Diego to Tijuana Airport three hours prior to departure time.
Interjet is a typical budget-airline with few thrills. However, its fleet of Airbus A320 planes is new with comfortable seats and a remarkable 34” of legroom. Online check-in is allowed up to 48 hours prior to flight departure (although not available for departures from Cancún.) Up to two carry-on bags and two checked suitcases are transported for free.
From its hub at Toluca Airport, Interjet offers at least daily flights to Acapulco, Cancún, Chihuahua, Ciudad del Carmen, Ciudad Juárez, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta, San José del Cabo, Tampico, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Veracruz, and Zihuatanejo. Flights to popular beach resorts increase dramatically over weekends.
A reasonably priced luxury van service (with broadband internet access) is available to Interjet passengers from various points in Mexico City to Toluca Airport.
Avolar is a budget airline based in Tijuana. It has a daily flight from Tijuana to Toluca on a Boeing 737. Its on-ground services in Toluca are limited with no special transportation services available to its passengers.
Toluca International Airport (TLC) is in Toluca, the capital of the State of Mexico, 40 km (25 miles) to the west of Mexico City. Passengers using Mexican budget airlines Volaris and Interjet will usually find the best ground transportation deals through these two airlines.
Others must use taxis, own cars, or the services of Caminante Aeropuerto, which operates buses from various points in Mexico City. From the suburb of Sante Fe at the western edges of Mexico City, the journey time is half an hour but reckon on at least an hour (and significantly more during peak traffic times) from other parts in the city. Car rental is available through Europcar and Thrifty.
Similar information is available for Mexican low-cost carriers flying from Acapulco, Cancun, Mexico City Airport, Tijuana, Cuernavaca, and Puebla.
